The short version
- Height: top of a horizontal bar 33"–36" above the finished floor.
- Toilets: a 42"+ side-wall bar and a 36"+ rear-wall bar.
- Showers & tubs: bars on two or three walls depending on the layout, all at the same height.
- Bar: 1¼"–2" diameter, 1½" from the wall, no sharp edges, must not rotate.
- Strength: 250 lb applied anywhere, without failure — bar, fastener, anchor and wall together.
- Where it's law: commercial and public facilities. At home: not required — we use it as a guide and fit the bar to you.
Where these rules apply
The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design set the federal requirements for places of public accommodation and commercial facilities: clinics and medical offices, churches, restaurants, retail, hotels, offices, and the common areas of senior living and multi-family properties. In Texas, the state adopted a matching code — the 2012 Texas Accessibility Standards (TAS), administered by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) — so a project in Dallas–Fort Worth has to satisfy both, and in practice they say the same thing about grab bars.
Neither standard applies to a privately owned single-family home. That said, the numbers below are the most thoroughly tested guidance there is on where a hand-hold does the most good, which is why we start from them in every residential install and then adjust for the person. See In your home.
Section numbers. Chapter 6 of the Standards covers bathrooms: §604 water closets (toilets), §607 bathtubs, §608 showers and §609 grab bars themselves. TAS uses the same numbering, so a citation like "§609.4" means the same thing in both.
Mounting height — §609.4
Horizontal grab bars are mounted so the top of the gripping surface sits 33 inches minimum and 36 inches maximum above the finished floor. The one exception is the lower of the two back-wall bars at a bathtub, which sits 8"–10" above the tub rim (§607.4). At showers and tubs every bar is installed at the same height.
Measure to the top of the bar, not the center or the flange, and from the finished floor — tile, not subfloor.
Toilets (water closets) — §604.5

The rear-wall bar may be shortened to 24" (centered) where a lavatory or wall obstruction prevents the full length, and a swing-up bar is allowed on the open side of certain accessible toilets in residential dwelling units (§604.5.2 exceptions).
Showers — §608.3
Shower requirements depend on the compartment type. In all three, bars are mounted per §609 (33"–36", same height throughout) and where a seat is provided, no bar is installed on the wall above the seat.

Bar size, clearance and surface — §609.2, §609.3, §609.5
- Circular bars
- Outside diameter 1¼" minimum to 2" maximum (§609.2.1).
- Non-circular bars
- Cross-section no more than 2" in any direction; perimeter between 4" and 4.8" (§609.2.2).
- Wall clearance
- 1½" between the wall and the bar (§609.3).
- Spacing
- At least 12" clear above the bar, and 1½" clear below and at the ends, so a hand can wrap it without hitting shelves, soap dishes or towel bars. Exceptions allow a shower control or unit above a bar in some cases (§609.3).
- Surface
- Free of sharp or abrasive elements, with rounded edges (§609.5). Textured finishes such as knurled and peened stainless are fine — they improve wet grip without being abrasive.
Strength and mounting — §609.6, §609.8
§609.8 Structural strength. The bar, its fasteners, the mounting device and the supporting structure must all resist a 250-pound force applied at any point without failure. This is the number every reputable grab bar is engineered to and the reason "screwed to the drywall" is not an installation.
§609.6 Fittings. The bar must not rotate within its fittings. Concealed-flange bars with a proper anchor behind each flange satisfy this; loose flanges or spinning bars do not.
How we get there: a stud whenever one is where the bar belongs. The Texas process — TDLR and TAS
- Texas enforces accessibility through the Architectural Barriers Act (Texas Government Code Chapter 469) and the 2012 TAS, administered by TDLR.
- Every covered building or facility must comply with TAS regardless of project cost.
- Projects with an estimated construction cost of $50,000 or more must also be registered with TDLR, have plans reviewed by a Registered Accessibility Specialist (RAS), and be inspected after completion.
- Registration, review and inspection are the property owner's responsibility. When we install grab bars in a commercial restroom, we install to TAS and can provide a certificate of insurance, W-9 and a written description of what was installed for your file.
In your home: the standard is the starting point, the person is the priority
The ADA was written for a stranger of unknown height using a public restroom once. Your bathroom is used by the same one or two people every day, so we can do better than the average. Here is how we use these rules in a DFW home:
- Start at 33"–36", then adjust. Shorter users are usually more comfortable toward 33"–34"; taller users toward 35"–36". We hold the bar in place and have the person try it before we mark anything.
- Favor the stronger hand and the side the person actually reaches toward when they sit, stand or step over.
- Add a vertical bar at the shower or tub entry (typically 18"). It isn't in the ADA, but it's the single most useful bar for stepping over a tub wall or across a wet threshold.
- Diagonal tub bars on the long wall give a moving hand-hold through the whole step-over. Also not an ADA configuration; very effective in a home.
- Sizing: 1¼" bars suit most hands, including arthritic ones; 1½" for larger hands or a heavier build.
- Placement is confirmed with you on the day, during the free safety assessment that comes with every install. Your preference and fit come first; if we think a spot won't hold or won't help, we'll say so.
Common questions
How high should a grab bar be mounted?
ADA / TAS §609.4: top of the gripping surface 33"–36" above the finished floor. In a home that range is where we start; the right height for one person depends on their height and reach, and we have them try it before we drill.
Does the ADA apply to grab bars in my house?
No. The ADA Standards and TAS apply to public accommodations and commercial facilities, not privately owned single-family homes. They remain the best-tested guidance available, so we use them as the starting point and fit the bar to the person.
How much weight must an ADA grab bar hold?
§609.8: 250 pounds applied at any point on the bar, fastener, mounting device or supporting structure, without failure. Stud-mounted bars and rated grab-bar fasteners exceed this comfortably; ordinary drywall anchors do not.
Are textured (knurled or peened) bars ADA compliant?
Yes. §609.5 requires surfaces free of sharp or abrasive elements with rounded edges. Knurled and peened stainless bars meet this and improve grip when hands are wet. See our article on knurled grab bars.
Do I need a permit or inspection for grab bars in Texas?
Not for a private home. For a commercial or public facility, TAS applies regardless of cost, and projects of $50,000 or more must be registered with TDLR and reviewed and inspected by a Registered Accessibility Specialist. That process belongs to the property owner; we install to TAS and document what we did.
