Do Grab Bars Rust Over Time?

While stainless steel grab bars (types #301/304) are designed to be rust-resistant, they are not entirely immune to rust. Generally, they will not rust or stain even after extended use. However, without proper care, they might develop minor rust or stains over time.

How to Prevent Rust on Grab Bars

To avoid rust on grab bars, ensure they do not come into contact with:

  • Concentrated chlorine, such as urine spray

  • Corrosive substances, like acidic cleaners (avoid bleach)

  • High iron content water or iron materials (such as steel wool)

Regular maintenance is crucial to keeping stainless steel grab bars clean and contaminant-free. When installing grab bars, use stainless steel screws and apply silicone both underneath and on the screws to keep the wall penetrations waterproof.

How to Remove Rust from Grab Bars

If rust appears on your grab bars, remove it quickly to prevent permanent pitting. Here are the steps:

  1. Use a mild abrasive cleaner (Bon Ami or Ajax) with a wet cotton cloth on the rusted area.

  2. Rub in the direction of the grain until the rust is removed.

  3. Rinse well and dry thoroughly.

For persistent stains, you may need to scrub with stainless steel wool and a mild abrasive cleaner in paste form, following the grain direction. Use stainless steel pads, sponges, or plastic or wood tools if scraping is needed.
